Easy Autumn Craft - Mum's the Word

In September, chrysanthemums appear in grocery stores, flower markets and at the pumpkin patch in shades that match the flaming foliage of maples and oaks.

Simple floral wreaths brighten front doors and offer a warm welcome! A tapestry of fall hues is woven together here by first repeating flowers like the brown-eyes "Viking" mums around the form to establish a color pattern, then filling in with blooms in complementary shades.

Step 1:
Soak a florist foam wreath form thoroughly in a mixture of water and flower food diluted according to the label instructions. Reinforce the form by repeatedly wrapping a piece of florist tape around one area; then fasten a piece of wire over it to make a hanger. Position the wire loop at the form's plastic back for easy hanging.

Step 2:
Cut each flower just below the bloom head, leaving a stem about one inch long. Push stems into the foam so that the blossoms hug the surface. Fill the form completely, grouping similar colors.

Don't-Be-A-Chicken Chili
from Halloween

Sour cream and whipping cream are stirred into this chili, making it extra rich and creamy. Double this recipe and keep it warm for your guests in a 5-quart slow cooker.

1 T. oil
1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breasts,
    cubed
1 onion, chopped
14-oz. can chicken broth
2 (15.8-oz.) cans Great Northern beans,
    drained and rinsed
2 (4-1/2 oz.) cans chopped green chiles
1-1/2 t. garlic powder
1 t. salt
1 t. ground cumin
1/2 t. dried oregano
8-oz. container sour cream
1 c. whipping cream
2 c. shredded Monterey Jack cheese
Garnish: cilantro sprigs

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat; add chicken and onion. Saute 10 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through; set aside. Combine broth, beans, undrained chiles and seasonings in a large Dutch oven. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Add chicken mixture; reduce heat and simmer 30 minutes. Add sour cream and whipping cream, stirring well. Top each serving with shredded cheese; garnish, if desired. Serves 6 to 8.
